Narasimha Chaturdashi, also known as Narasimha Jayanti, is one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Narasimha appeared in the form of a half-man and half-lion to protect His devotee Prahlada and destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
This festival reminds devotees that whenever evil increases and innocent people suffer, God appears to protect righteousness and His devotees.
In 2026, Narasimha Chaturdashi will be observed on:
Thursday, 30 April 2026
Chaturdashi Tithi Begins: 29 April 2026 at 7:51 PM
Chaturdashi Tithi Ends: 30 April 2026 at 9:12 PM
Madhyahna Sankalp Time: 30 April 2026 from 11:04 AM to 1:44 PM
Sayana Kala Puja Time: 30 April 2026 from 4:17 PM to 6:56 PM
The evening puja is especially important because Lord Narasimha is believed to have appeared at sunset.
Narasimha Chaturdashi is celebrated to honor the appearance of Lord Narasimha.
According to the story from the Bhagavata Purana, the demon king Hiranyakashipu became very powerful and proud. He did not allow anyone to worship Lord Vishnu. But his son Prahlada was a great devotee of Vishnu.
Even after many attempts to harm Prahlada, Hiranyakashipu could not stop his devotion. Finally, Lord Vishnu appeared from a pillar in the form of Narasimha—half man and half lion—and killed Hiranyakashipu.
Lord Narasimha appeared:
Not as a man or animal
Not during day or night, but at twilight
Not inside or outside the house, but at the doorway
Not with a weapon, but with His nails
In this way, Lord Narasimha destroyed evil while keeping every condition of the boon given to Hiranyakashipu.
Narasimha Chaturdashi teaches that God always protects those who have faith and devotion.
This day is important because:
It symbolizes the victory of truth over evil
It gives courage and strength to devotees
It removes fear, negativity, and obstacles
Lord Narasimha blesses devotees with protection and peace
Worship on this day is believed to remove problems, enemies, and difficulties
Devotees especially pray to Lord Narasimha for:
Protection from fear and danger
Mental peace
Success in life
Family happiness

Most devotees observe a fast on this day and worship Lord Narasimha in the evening.
Common observances include:
Fasting from sunrise until evening
Chanting the Narasimha mantra

Offering flowers, fruits, tulsi, and prasadam

or
Ugram Viram Maha Vishnum
