On Akshaya Tritiya, charity (Dhanam) is considered extremely sacred and powerful. The word “Akshaya” means “never ending” or “that which never decreases.” It is believed that any donation made on this day brings blessings and merit that never diminish.
According to Hindu scriptures, the good deeds and charity performed on Akshaya Tritiya give “Akshaya Punyam” — everlasting spiritual merit. That is why people donate food, water, clothes, grains, fruits, and money on this day.
Among all forms of charity, Annadanam (donating food) is considered the greatest.
“Anna Daanam Maha Daanam”
Giving food is the highest form of charity.
Feeding a hungry person is believed to be equal to serving God. Even feeding one person on Akshaya Tritiya is said to bring many times more blessings.
Important types of charity on Akshaya Tritiya include:
-
Annadanam – feeding the poor and hungry
