Day 4: Bhishma
As the grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, Bhishma was bound by duty to fight for the Kauravas, though his heart longed for Dharma. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, he unleashed powerful weapons, even against Krishna’s beloved Arjuna. Yet, in his heart, Bhishma remained a pure devotee of Krishna.
When Bhishma’s arrows rained down fiercely, Krishna, unable to tolerate harm to Arjuna, lifted a chariot wheel and rushed toward Bhishma. Seeing Krishna’s fierce form, Bhishma smiled with tears of devotion—he had no greater desire than to be slain by the Lord Himself. But Krishna stopped, honoring His vow, and Bhishma’s devotion only deepened.
Eventually, Bhishma was struck down and lay on a bed of arrows, his body pierced, yet his mind peaceful. He chose to wait for an auspicious time to leave his body—Uttarayana. As he lay in pain, Krishna personally came to his side. With tears in his eyes, Bhishma gazed upon Krishna’s divine face.
In his final moments, Bhishma meditated solely on Krishna, speaking timeless truths to Yudhishthira about Dharma and kingship. Krishna stood by him, offering His darshan and blessing him with liberation. Though they stood on opposite sides in battle, Krishna never left the heart of His devotee.
Because Bhishma surrendered fully at the end, Krishna gave him the greatest gift—His presence at the time of death.
Let me hear you 😊
