How Radha Ashtami is Celebrated at Home, in Temples, and in Barsana & Vrindavan

Radha Ashtami, the divine appearance day of Srimati Radharani, falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. While Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, Radha Ashtami honors His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani, who embodies pure devotion (bhakti). Across India and the world, devotees celebrate this festival with immense love and enthusiasm, but its beauty shines most radiantly in Barsana and Vrindavan—the sacred land of Radha and Krishna.

Celebration at Home

Many devotees choose to celebrate Radha Ashtami in the simplicity of their own homes, transforming their personal space into a temple of devotion.

  • Altar Decoration: Homes are decorated with flowers, rangoli, lamps, and fresh leaves. Special attention is given to adorning Radharani’s picture or deity with red and yellow flowers, which symbolize divine love.

  • Fasting & Pooja: Devotees observe a fast until noon, offering prayers, bhajans, and chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Fruits, sweets, and tulsi leaves are offered to Radharani before breaking the fast.

  • Storytelling & Reading Scriptures: Families gather to read from sacred texts like Srimad Bhagavatam, Radha Rasa Sudhanidhi, or stories of Radha-Krishna’s divine pastimes.

  • Bhajans & Kirtan: Singing Radha bhajans and kirtans fills the home with spiritual energy, reminding everyone of Radharani’s unmatched devotion to Krishna.

Celebration in Temples

In temples across India and abroad, Radha Ashtami is celebrated with grandeur.

  • Abhishekam (Sacred Bath): The deities of Radha and Krishna are bathed with milk, honey, yogurt, ghee, and scented water while devotees chant Vedic hymns.

  • Special Darshan: On this day, temples often unveil Radharani’s lotus feet, which are usually kept covered throughout the year. Devotees consider this darshan supremely auspicious.

  • Processions & Kirtans: Colorful processions with devotees singing and dancing through the streets create an atmosphere of divine joy.

  • Feasts (Prasadam): Large feasts are prepared and distributed, symbolizing love and sharing. Sweets like kheer, laddus, and fruit dishes are commonly offered.

  • Discourses: Saints and temple leaders narrate the glories of Srimati Radharani, inspiring devotees to deepen their devotion.
