Akshaya Tritiya – 10 May 2024

Akshaya means eternal, that which does not decay and Tritiya means third. So this festival occurs on the third day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Vaishakha every year.

Akshaya Tritiya is a very auspicious day and any auspicious activity can be carried out without seeing any muhurta, as there is nothing inauspicious about this day.

Some of the auspicious events that took place on this day are given below:

  • Lord Parashurama, one of the Lord’s foremost avatars, appeared on this day.
  • The holy Ganga descended to this material world, from the Lord’s abode, on this very day.
  • Sudama, the poor brahmana friend of Krishna, went to meet Krishna in Dwaraka on this day. The Lord blessed Sudama with unlimited prosperity in reciprocation to Sudama’s humble offering of chipped rice.
  • This day signifies the arrival of Chandan Yatra every year, where the Lordships are anointed with sandalwood paste.

On this day, along with buying new items, donating is also considered a symbol of gathering virtue and bringing prosperity. Even if we start investing just a little in our Bhakti life from this day on, one can reap eternal benefits of peace and happiness from the soul. All kinds of fears are thrown out and one can escape the cycle of birth and death forever.
